The Maps
The maps used for this race are special colour maps of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area and surrounding areas. Each team is given three copies of map#1. Map#2 will be handed out to team members during the course. The maps are at a scale of 1:20,000 with a contour interval of 5m. The race course has already been pre-printed in red on these maps. A triangle represents the start location, a double circle represents the finish location and circles represent the location of each of the checkpoints (CP). Only the first map has a legend on it. Teams MUST take all three copies of race maps with them on the course. You are not permitted to use any other maps during the race.

Race Course Preview
Mike Waddington, a member of Team E.A.S. HAMMER Adventure Racing and the Golden Horseshoe Orienteering Club, has once again designed this year’s RAID THE HAMMER. Here is some information from the course planner.

This year’s course has some interesting surprises. The first surprise begins at the start of an awesome trekking section offering some awesome navigation route choice. Teams will have the choice of about 7 or 8 different routes. The Advanced Orienteering section will not be known until teams arrive at the start of this section of the race...and teams are in for big surprise #2 here. After last year's race which visited some of Hamilton's most beautiful waterfalls, I have kept the tradition of a CP (or two) at a waterfall. Some are more cascades and one small one was dry but they are still nice. There will also be opportunities to shorten the course if your team isn't ready for the full 25km. Oh and did I say that this year’s course has lots of climb – mainly in the first 10km! The race course is 25km in length and is divided into seven sections.

I: The Canadian Outback Trek (Trekking, 5.0km)

II: GHO Orienteering Challenge (Orienteering, 3.0km)

III: Trail Runner Magazine Trail Test (Trail Running, 2.5km)

IV: AXIS GEAR Matrix (Orienteering, 2.5km)

V: Litzen’s Sports Road Rash (Road Running, 2.5km)

VI: Waterfalls Trek (Trekking, 2.5km)

VII: A Backwoods Adventure! (Advanced Orienteering, 7.0km)

Electronic Passport
Each team will be given an electronic passport stamp. These are also known as Sport-Ident sticks and cost about $35 each. These SI ticks will soon be required gear in orienteering events held in southern Ontario and are commonly used in Adventure Races in Europe.
HOW DOES IT WORK? The SI-stick fits onto the index finger and is kept in place with the strap. On occasions the SI-stick has been known to fall off. Teams may consider pinning the electronic passport stamp in a pocket or more secure place. At almost all of the checkpoints and at the finish there will be a box located on a yellow stand. The box is a ~10cm x 5cm x2cm box that has open circle slot. The SI-stick is placed into the slot (red end) and held in the slot until a red light flashes with a beep. This indicates that the time has been recorded on your SI-stick (electronic passport). Teams must place the SI-stick at each CP. Failure to do so will result in a time penalty and possible disqualification. When teams cross the finish line they will also need to use the SI-stick. At that point teams must bring the SI-stick to the download area. Within seconds teams will be given a print-out of their total time and split times between CP’s. A test CP will be available at the start area for teams to practice.
